To really understand Telecom equipment, you need to understand telecommunications in general. Telecommunication as defined by the good people at Wikipedia would be: "Telecommunication is the transmission of information, over significant distances, to communicate."

You see, in the past, telecommunications meant utilizing visual signs or signals, such as light or fire beacons, perhaps smoke, semaphore telegraphs. In close enough ranges one might use signal flags, optical heliographs, or even the simple audio messages like coded drumbeats, air horns, or just really really loud whistles.

In this modern time of electric gadgets and electronics in their most advanced manifestations, telecommunications can now include the use of radio and microwave communications, or fiber optics and any associated electronics that might accompany them. And let's not forget the use of the satellites orbiting our planet and the ever-so critical Internet.

What might be considered to be the first real breakthrough of modern electrical telecommunications was to fully develop the telegraph system of communication, this started in the 1830's. This innovative use of electricity and electrical means of communications caused an explosion of use throughout the world in the 19th century. This technology also connected the people of the globe by use of cables on the floors of the ocean. IN fact, we find it most important that even in these early stages of development for this technology, the use of the first three popular systems of electrical communicating (the telegraph, telephone and teletype), all required conduction through metal wires.

Then, the real revolution in wireless telecommunications kicked in at the first decade of the 20th century. This, when Guglielmo Marconi won the Nobel Prize in Physics (1909) for pioneering developments related to wireless radio communications. Others to note in the field of electrical and electronic telecommunications include; Charles Wheatstone, Samuel Morse, Alexander Graham Bell, Nikola Tesla, Edwin Armstrong, and Lee de Forest (radio). Additionally, John Logie Baird and Philo Farnsworth for their work in television.
